FAQs

Our priority is to get you back to doing what you love as quickly and safely as possible. We do everything we can to ensure that your physical therapy experience is a positive one. Below you’ll find answers to the most common questions our patients ask. Please reach out to us if there is anything else we can answer.

What do physical therapists do?

Physical therapists are uniquely trained and qualified to treat musculoskeletal (MSK) issues. The focus of physical therapy is to restore normal function after injury or surgery. At Proliance Physical and Hand Therapy, you will work one-on-one with a physical therapist who will listen to your concerns, conduct a thorough examination, and develop a plan specific to your needs and goals. We are focused on not just getting you better…but keeping you strong, flexible, and pain-free. So, during your therapy sessions your therapist will also teach you strategies to stay healthy and prevent injuries in the future.

What kinds of conditions can physical therapy treat?

Physical therapy can help treat just about any orthopedic injury or condition, including

  • Post-surgical recovery
  • Sports injuries
  • Low back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Hip pain
  • Knee pain
  • Foot and ankle pain
  • Scoliosis
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Vertigo
  • Mobility limitations
  • Gait dysfunction
  • Pelvic Health
  • Vestibular
  • Neurologic conditions

I'm having/had surgery, what should I do?

Please contact us to schedule your post-surgery appointments as soon as possible. The first thing we need to know us how long after your surgery your surgeon wants physical therapy to begin. Please bring any notes or treatment recommendations from your doctor to your first appointment. Your therapist will work closely with your surgeon to ensure we develop the optimum protocol for your recovery.

Is physical therapy the right place for me to start?

Physical therapy is often a great place to start (and may be all you need to recover from many conditions). The first thing our physical therapists do with new patients is to perform a careful and thorough examination. This is essential to diagnose your pain or injury to determine the best route to recovery. If during your exam they discover anything that warrants a further workup (e.g. imaging, other diagnostics, examination by a physician), we can recommend excellent providers to ensure there is no delay to getting on the path to recovery.

Does physical therapy hurt?

The goal of physical therapy is to relieve pain and the underlying dysfunctions that cause it. Depending on your issues you may experience temporary soreness from using muscles that are weakened or recovering. Please maintain good communication with your therapist so they can minimize discomfort and maximize recovery. We want to help you achieve full pain relief, and a return to your normal activities, as quickly as possible.

How often do I need to attend physical therapy?

How frequently and for how long will depend upon your diagnosis and your doctor’s recommendation. One to three appointments per week is common at the outset. Appointments often are more spread out towards the end. Three to six weeks is a pretty typical duration for most surgery and injury recovery.

How long will my physical therapy appointment be?

Appointments for physical therapy vary in length depending on your diagnosis and activity level. On average, a patient’s first visit lasts about an hour. For the initial visit, we typically ask patients to arrive 15 minutes early to sign-in, complete paperwork and/or change clothes. Subsequent visits are typically 45-60 minutes in length.

What do I do after my physical therapy sessions are done and my pain is gone?

At Proliance Physical and Hand Therapy our goal isn’t just to get you better, it is to keep you strong, pain-free, and flexible long term! Throughout your therapy sessions your therapist will be teaching you how to continue with at-home exercises after your in-person meetings are no longer necessary.

They will begin your first visit by conducting a comprehensive assessment. This will provide the basis for a customized plan to get you better as quickly as possible. Your course of treatment will also typically include home exercise recommendations to maximize your recovery and help you to keep yourself strong, flexible, and pain free after your therapy sessions are completed.
