Manual therapy, or manipulative therapy, is a physical treatment primarily used by physical therapists, to treat musculoskeletal pain and disability;

it includes soft tissue mobilization, assisted stretching and strengthening, joint mobilization and joint manipulation. Each of the techniques listed above can be beneficial when used in the correct circumstances. Many are often employed in tandem with one another to accelerate healing and reduce recovery time of many soft tissue disorders.

As you might expect, manual therapy is considered a “hands-on” treatment because each technique within this category involves the therapist physically touching you.

Manual therapy can be a valuable addition to PT for a variety of concerns. For example, following a surgery or procedure, joint mobilizations and passive stretching often play an important role in recovering your range of motion in the affected area.

Certain types of manipulations and mobilizations may also be used following a more acute injury, like a back or neck strain. In addition, soft tissue mobilization can be beneficial for managing chronic pain complaints and improving participation in the more active components of therapy.

Some of the most common treatment options we use are:

Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM)

Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue mobilization (IASTM) is a method of treatment directed specifically towards soft-tissue repair, remodeling, and regeneration. IASTM utilizes ergonomically designed stainless steel instruments to discover areas of scar tissue and fascial restriction following soft tissue trauma or injury (typically resulting from repetitive strain, acute trauma, surgery, or immobilization). The instruments are then used to treat these areas by breaking down scar tissue, releasing fascial restriction, and improving soft tissue function (flexibility, mobility, and strength) with proper remodeling of fibrosis and scar tissue. This provides for a superior therapeutic option for soft tissue injuries, especially when used in combination with joint manipulation and exercise designed to correct biomechanical deficiencies.

Kinesio Taping Method

The Kinesio Taping® Method is a rehabilitative taping technique that is designed to facilitate the body’s natural healing process while providing support and stability to muscles and joints without restricting the body’s range of motion as well as providing extended soft tissue manipulation to prolong the benefits of manual therapy administered in our clinic. Latex-free and wearable for days at a time, Kinesio® Tape is safe for populations ranging from pediatric to geriatric, and successfully treats a variety of orthopedic, neuromuscular, neurological and other medical conditions.

The Kinesio® Taping Method is a therapeutic taping technique not only offering you the support you are looking for, but also rehabilitating your condition as well. Kinesio® Tape can be applied in hundreds of ways depending upon your condition and where it needs to be applied. It has the ability to re-educate the neuromuscular system, reduce pain and inflammation, optimize performance, prevent injury and promote good circulation and healing, and assist in returning the body to homeostasis. . It has been proven to have positive physiological effects on the skin, lymphatic and circulatory system, fascia, muscles, ligaments, tendons, and joints. It can be used in conjunction with your other treatments within our office and is effective during the rehabilitative and chronic phases of an injury.
